A Brief History

In 2010, philosophy professor Brendan Myers noticed that some of his students had to make hard choices between purchasing textbooks for his courses or paying the rent.

Regarding it as unjust that his students were compelled by circumstance to make that kind of choice, he assembled a team of writers, editors, and designers, and composed a college-level textbook in logic and critical reasoning, “Clear and Present Thinking“. He paid his collaborators with funds raised on Kickstarter, then made the book available to his students, and to the world, for free.

Today, we are still a small independent publisher, although the team has grown. Most members are creative people with graduate degrees in various fields in the arts and humanities. We publish fiction and nonfiction in the fields of philosophy, arts, and humanities, with high academic standards, while remaining accessible to everyone in terms of style, and in terms of price.

While other academic publishers price their titles in the hundreds of dollars, none of our titles are more than $30 (CAD).

Our Vision

We believe there is no single form for philosophical writing, and no standard style. From Plato’s dialogues, Spinoza’s ‘geometric’ style, Nietzsche’s aphorisms, Wittgenstein’s numbered propositions, and Murdoch’s novels, philosophers have experiment with many forms and styles, with excellent effect more often than not. The prose essay, common in professional journals and in classrooms today, is a relative newcomer to the field.

We therefore encourage our writers to experiment with their form and style, to make their work inspirational, provocative, and enjoyable, to as wide an audience as possible.
